I honestly believe this is the guy the Jets needed to get, he hummed the ball during the combine and "experts" sing his praises as far as football IQ. Very happy. I agree. As long as the kid has a good football IQ, he could turn into something special. He has all the physical tools, just has to learn to apply them in the pro game. Give him a year or two to work his ass off and learn the pro game -- reading defenses, taking snap from center, going through progressions, calling plays, etc -- and we could have a really good starter. Maybe he never reaches that potential, but the upside is significant enough to warrant a 4th round pick. I think he is a much better prospect than some of the other mid to late round guys we have taken the last several years (Boyd, Ainge, McElroy). His upside is starter -- these guys upside was back-up.

Petty is the type of QB I love, prototypical pocket passer, big arm, smart, can make all the throws.
For some reason these days experts prefer QB's to be athletic duel threat like Mariota.
Give me a conventional pocket passer any day of the week.

I see a lot of similarities between Petty and Andy Dalton when he came out of TCU. Dalton was a better athlete and more mobile, but they both came from similar offenses, have similar arm talent and both struggled with coming off their first read. If it is going to click for Petty I don't think it will take 3 years for him to develop, he could seriously compete for the starting job next season.

I don't care if Geno and Fitz suck. I don't want to see Petty take a meaningful snap this year. Let him hold a clipboard, watch film, get coached up in practice and maybe play late in a meaningless game to get a taste of it.

He moves pretty well with the fb, though i think the only worrisome bit is dealing when the pocket collapses from watching the film posted above.

My concern is the vocal half of our fan base and media turdnuggets like Manish trying to rile up a Petty movement as soon as things go south. Hopefully it won't even come to that, and if it does, Mac and Bowles stick to their guns.

To be honest though most pocket passer QB's who have that prototypical thick set frame at 6'2+ look uncomfortable being chased down when flushed from the pocket. Biggest 3 things I love about him are... Smart football IQ. Natural thrower. Leadership qualities. Defiantly can start once he nails the mental aspect of a pro offense. Fitz will start this year and Petty will be ready next year, Geno is toast IMO

I hope Geno has a great year with the weapons at disposal, but woud be great to have Petty challenge him in 2016.

Some food for thought - lets say Geno ends up at QB this year and ends up playing fairly well with all the pieces around him, maybe even making a decent playoff run. Do we still try to get Petty in there? Would a QB competition be the right move or is that just regressing back to the Rex way of thinking? Would be an interesting scenario, honestly a good problem to have.

Winston is anything but a developmental QB. MM is one but less of a project than Petty. I wanted Perty as a project but Petty isn't the best QB in he draft because of anything today. If you think that Jameis wasn't a first round talent you really shouldn't be talking about QBs in a draft class. Winston is EJ Manual 2.0 I said in several posts that both Winston Mariota are not day 1 picks the media and the terrible selection of talent has hype these guys through the roof. There are better options such as Petty and Grayson are both better options. Manual is Geno smith throws a ton of picks and gets the ball knocked out of his hand when under pressure. Grayson and Petty will be better QBS if given the time to develop. None of these QBS are day 1 starters I hope the fans shut up and don't pressure this franchise to start Petty this year under no circumstances should Petty see the field if this kid is forced to start then you will have ruined another QB. This kid can play and after watching all 3 of these kids Petty is the best of the bunch providing he sits for a year or 2. Ok, Winston and Mariota are not day one picks. Other than the first two teams that picked and the entire contingent of NFL GMs disagree with you, you make a brilliant argument

You have to assume their eyes will tell them which of the two gives the team the best chance to win and when/if Petty is better than whoever was playing at the end of the season he'll be given the chance to lead the team.

What IF petty shows he can play right away why force him to sit ? If he out performs our current qbs, though it's unlikely geno and fitz are experienced nfl qbs. I wanna see this guy do good he has potential .

What i like most about him is his humble attitude and the fact that he almost never thows picks.

I wanna see this guy do good he has potential . IF he does outperform both Fitz and Geno then that's great and dandy but he should still sit. There is no reason other than impatience to force him out there as a rookie. Let him sit and learn with no pressure. It's the best thing for him. The Jets have tried the "throw his feet to the fire" way your describing with Geno and Sanchez and how'd that work? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
