We would all like to hope that Petty suffers from Wilsonism and legitimately wins the battle in camp
However that shit ain't happening. What is inevitably happening is as follows:
1. He is working with an OC known to get the most out of crappy qbs (see Fitzmagic in Buffalo)
2. He is working with said crappy qb to better learn said OC's offense in depth
3. He is working with at least two proven weapons in Decker and Marshall, maybe more.
4. He is going against the NFL's best secondary and DL every day in practice
This is a recipe for success. Not saying petty is a sure thing but any QB would be lucky to be given that kind of environment to learn in. All that's missing is a star QB to learn from and a great OL to sit behind. But that's a good situation for Petty to learn in regardless. No excuses now. We have three potentially competent qbs on the roster. If one can't be the guy by the end of the year we are truly cursed.

The concern with Petty is that he's not very mobile and when he tries to throw on the run or make a last second throw to his 2nd or 3rd read he craps the bed. If that was happening in college it could be a VERY bad problem with faster players at the NFL level. He needs some remedial work on reading defenses and decision-making.

Pretty positive assessment from Gruden

Fitzmagic should be starting unless Geno somehow plays much better. (that spread thing should help Geno iirc) Petty don't need to be putting on a helmet this year.
Let Fitzmagic not fuck it up with a great OC in Gailey. That's all we need. Just don't fuck it up.

Petty is a natural thrower - that's a rarity in today's NFL. If he has the chance to properly develop for a year or so he certainly has the tools and the potential to make a splash
The opportunity for Tom Petty references alone are off the charts. Bryce Petty and the Heartbreakers? Free fallin into the end zone?

What I'm trying to say is that I think given the resources we are able to give him I think he should develop quicker than expected. Maybe he's not a 1.5 year project anymore . maybe here he can be ready by week 12. Its petty I know (pun intended) but point is he's going up against the best of the best in practice and being coaches by a guy with a proven track record

No one else in the league other than Geno and Fitz will be trying to find holes to throw in between Richardson Wilkerson Williams revis cromartie skrine etc in practice. Between those three DL that's probably the most fearsome 1000 pounds of predator in the league. Nothing will scare these guys on game day.

Petty was the best developmental QB prospect in this draft. Kid is a natural thrower with good footwork and very smart. I hope he isn't even in consideration to start this year and can just take the year to learn the offense, get comfortable with the pro game, and lead the scout team in practice.
I have no doubts that come next off-season he will compete and win the starting job. He's simply too good of a thrower and too smart to not win the job next year.

Sensational pick, wanted him from the get go and would've had no problem taking him where he should have gone in the 2nd.
Make no bones about it, Petty will wipe the floor with Geno.

I said months ago this guy was the best QB in the draft and the Jets didn't need to trade up for top 2 busts at QB. However I hope the Jets let Petty sit a year and learn. My feeling he can be the next big franchise QB this team has missed since Namath but he needs time to learn. If this kid is rushed guaranteed the Jets will be drafting another QB. The fans on this board and The rest of jets fans need to understand this. If the we want Petty to start begins then this kid doesn't have a chance.

He's a developmental QB with a lot of upside. He's not the best QB in the draft right now and no one knows that he will be. We can hope though, I wanted him

big jump from playing in baylor's single read game to the nfl...hopefully the kid can make the jump between the ears because physically as a pocket passer, he's got what it takes

The system Mariota ran is similar to Baylors. Petty is the best QB in the draft if the Jets take their time Petty will do better the the top 2 QBS taken day 1. Not 1 QB in this draft was a round 1 pick. That's how much hype surrounded Mariota. Only other QB worth taking was Grayson but he doesn't have the arm Petty does.
