Someone explain this to me. This was measured on the field, the ref walked away and towards the Patriots line and then signalled a first down. Meanwhile, the scoreboard in the stadium read 4th down, and even the chain gang was confused. I'd like to believe this ref is not Bob Kraft's pocket, but what other explanation is there?

Really don't know. Maybe it's the 45 degree angle here making it look deceptive. That's all I've got.

And he didn't signal it right away, he trotted back behind the line of scrimmage, where Brady was standing, and then gave the first down sign.

Well it was marked short of a 1st down, clearly the officials wanted it to be a 1st down, they know Rex is a thick fucker so I'm guessing they thought they would see if they could get away with giving a 1st down on a down they already marked short.
They succeeded.
You get me?

Wait! Are you implying that the Refs thought that Rex is stupid? Imagine that.....

Refs couldn't have the Patriots loose. I'm still at a loss about this call. Hopefully it is explained. The announcers said Belacheat was going for it on 4th down, then suddently Rex throws the red flag, and it was a first down.

Refs couldn't have the Fagtriots loose. I'm still at a loss about this call. Hopefully it is explained. The announcers said Belacheat was going for it on 4th down, then suddently Rex throws the red flag, and it was a first down. Yeah. that was the most bizarre thing I've ever seen. But what's one more clusterfuck-decision by the refs to add to a clusterfuck-of-a-season by the Jets? Par for the course....

Nothing suprises me anymore when the patriots are playing. Especially when bend over brady starts crying to the refs

That's not a straight-on shot, you can tell by the angle of the chain compared to the bottom of the screen (along with teh pixels). I saw it during the game and to me it looked like at most there was a half inch gap between the nose of the ball and marker.

Sparklepony obviously knew the ref personally and just asked for a first down. AND IT WAS GIVEN.

Not only was it a really odd call - it was a terrible spot - called out by the tv crew as 'generous'.

It's the angle of the shot.
