Rex Ryan might have taken at a run at a television gig with ESPN already, but his priority is to be an NFL head coach again, and now he's going to get the chance to sell himself for that, too.
A person familiar with Ryan's thinking confirmed to NJ Advance Media Tuesday night that Ryan, the former Jets coach, is set to interview with the Falcons and 49ers next week. Brian Costello of the New York Post was first to report this news.
Ryan had interviewed with ESPN on Tuesday for a possible broadcasting gig. But that's his fallback position in case an NFL job doesn't materialize.
The Falcons, who went 6-10 this season, fired head coach Mike Smith on Monday. But their situation seems to be best suited for a coach like Ryan because they have an established veteran quarterback in Matt Ryan. One of the biggest knocks on Ryan's tenure with the Jets was his inability to develop young quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. But in Atlanta, he can focus his attention on his specialty—the defense—and leave the offense to Matt Ryan and the right coordinator.
The 49ers are looking for a coach now that Jim Harbaugh left for Michigan. The only other NFL teams searching for coaches other than the Jets are the Bears and Raiders.

Rex on SF would be interesting. Heard he loved Kaepernick in the draft. The amount of wildcat would seriously endanger all small mammalia in the region.
He would knock it out of the park as a studio analyst though.

Wish the big guy all the best. It didn't work out here in the long run and was time to part ways, but he's a great guy and a good DC. Best of luck to the man.

I don't think he'll get either one of these. Atlanta wants an offensive guy to lead Ryan from the ashes. Rex is QB kryptonite as everyone knows. San Fran? Who knows? Seems to me they've lined up mostly offensive guys.
Chicago might be his best shot but they haven't called yet.

If Rex is smart he will retain the offensive coaches including Koeter so they can maintain continuity. Imagine Ryan running the wildcat....haha what a disaster.

Atl is a better gig for him then San Fran.
Still plenty of time for him to ruin Kaepernick. Ryan is a developed product. All they need is a defense, and a soul. Rex would give them both.
I hope he does to go ATL as a matter of fact. Rex gets nothing but well wishes from me.

I HOPE HE GETS THE ATL GIG!
I been calling that most of the year. I'd love Rex to ATL! I can semi-root for the Falcons and I like Rex. Obviously we had to fire him, we all know this, but he'll get that Falcons team fired the fuck up. Their big problem is Defense... Falcons can win a fuckton of games holding teams to low points and not 38-56 shootouts.

Rex just guaranteed a Super Bowl victory in 2015, but he's not quite sure yet which team he'll be getting it for.
Rex got a bit of a raw deal here. I'll be rooting for him whenever he's not playing the Jets.
If it's truly down to either Atlanta, SF, or going to TV that makes his departure a lot more bearable. Glad he won't end up in the AFC.

Atl makes the most sense, that's a franchise that is just begging for some personality; not sure if SF wants to go in the same direction with another 'colorful' coach, but we'll see.
