I would absolutely say that mentoring is a form of coaching. I am not saying I like McCown as a QB other that the fact that he may be needed as a relatively low cost option to fill in for the young guys if the fall flat. Plus hopefully he has the ability to menor them.
Basically what you are saying is that if you suck so bad that no team will even pay you to play, you would be a better coach / mentor than somebody who actually got paid to play. That makes zero sense to me.
Yes, I get that McCown is not a good player but supposedly he understands the game and position. He's just not that good at playing it.
Some of the best coaches ever are guys that sucked at playing and some of the worst coaches were incredible players. Obviously not every bad player can coach or mentor and not every good player can't coach.
Give McCown credit for playing as long as he has when he isn't that good a player. He got paid a lot more money than most coaches. The highest paid head coach is only getting about $8M this year.
I am also not defending Bowles. He has been unimpressive to say the least. But I do think they needed a low cost vet. And hopefully one that can mentor but won't win a lot of games if called upon to play so wecan still get a high picknext year if Petty & Hack suck.
I honestly think we are sort of on the same page here. But having another coach / mentor around the young guys on the off chance they don't suck is not a bad thing to me.
As for the Gootz line... that was killer. lololol

Not that I am comparing McCown to him but how good a player was Bill Parcells? Drafted by the Lions and was released before he played a single game. My point is that by this "not uncommon train of thought", he probably couldn't teach or mentor any players. Not really a fair comparison, although I suppose we could debate on coaching being mentoring. Plus Parcells quickly found out he was on the wrong side of the ball and went on to his strength. McCown has been sucking for years and obviously is unable to learn anything. So how could he mentor on what he was unable to learn? Maybe "here's what I did and I sucked, so try not to do that." Only explanation, since we are on the subject of sucking, is that Bowels is surrounding himself with people that suck worse than him, hoping to look good in comparison. It's like hiring Ragu to teach etiquette or self control classes. Pretty sure theres a bunch of QB coaches out there that sucked as a QB who just didn't have the physical talent to do something with it. It's just understanding the position and experience and applying it to someone who does have the talent to make something of it. Isn't Jordan Palmer always brought up in teaching young QBs? Or Trent Dilfer.

This is the same sort of horse-shit that was going on under Rex. If you dont understand that discipline and buying in underlies every successful program you dont belong in the coaching game. Bottom line. Unreal. Message sent. The complete wrong one. starting to think Bowles may not be the right coach for the Jets? ya think?...welcome aboard...

I just watched part of the press conference. I was glad to hear that. Basically, every position should potentially be a competition every year. There are just some players that are so good, you basically know going in that they won't be beaten out. There are few of those players on the Jets right now. Players should come in knowing they have a chance to play and start. I thought Bowles was was wrong to say Fitz was the starter last year without competition. Granted, I think our QB position was so weak that he would have won out anyway but it should have been a competition to see if one of the kids could win the job. McCown certainly isn't a standout QB. I think he was brought in as a mentor. If he is the starter at the beginning of the season, it means that the young guys still need more work. If he finishes the season as the starter, then it likely means that Petty blows and probably Hack too. How can someone who totally sucks be a mentor? I'm not getting this not uncommon train of thought. I dont think its so uncommon. You have, presumably, a QB coach and an OC to work on mechanics and game plan and all that. IMO, a veteran mentor would handle the other side of things.. just be a sounding board for the young QBs, a guy who has been in the league, and someone who will hopefully be an example of how to prepare, how to be professional, and how to deal with adversity. McCown may "totally suck", but he's hung around the league an awful long time.

Bowles is a dummy ... he's moving in on Kotite as the biggest dummy ever to coach this team. We're you around during the Joe Walton Error? Yes ... I go back pretty far. Was in the Army in 69 and 1970 so I missed most of the best of Namath. Plus, home games were blacked-out. Didn't understand the firing of Michaels after he takes them to within a game of the superbowl ... which leads to the beginning of Walton. They were terrible until that season. Walton had players and should have gone further ... terrible coach ... terrible drafting and player moves ... very poor front office. They were making money so no one cared. And Walton bred Kotite. I remember the 86 season's 9 & 1 start ... was at the 1, a Thursday nighter against the Pats ... and was skiing at Camelback during the Cleveland debacle ...

If McCown sees the field it means we're back to square 1 in terms of searching for a QB. The fact they took him and not Cutler or Romo is encouraging. Thats what Ive felt from day 1 of signing McCown. They're setting up a competition with a veteran, but one where the bar is set so low... or at least mediocre, that if Petty and/or Hack cant beat him out, they know its draft a QB high in 2018. If/ when the jets go 3-13 or 4-12 (probably much worse) there is no way Bowles or Macc survives. None. the losers will be starting over again. Idzik to Macc. Can't wait to c who they get next. 👻

I get the feeling a positive image of McCown stuck in the minds of the Jets coaches. The D knocked him out of the game when he broke the pocket near the goal line; but he's tall and seems tough and smart enough to start for a while. But they will have to put a full team out there to really see if he can be productive starter for 2 years

They didn't sign McCown to see if he could be a productive starter for 2 games, let alone 2 years. He better not see the field for a snap unless both Hack and Petty get injured. 2 years? They only signed him for 1. _ _
