Dude, he's a 4-3 DE playing out of position for just about his entire tenure here. It's not his fault the defensive genius took him out of his natural spot. Exactly. When Mo went down he had some of his best games playing DE. There are zero reasons not to pick up his option. You mean when the season was over and we were playing shitty teams? That's when Coples looked his best? And even when he looked his best he put up journeyman numbers. And to clarify why I told McG to go fuck himself is because he knows exactly what bullshit he did. Wilkerson and Richardson are interior lineman. They aren't passrushers. So quoting their sack total in an attempt to justify Coples not being a shitty passrusher is a false equivalent and he knows it. Coples has under achieved and it was the reason no one was going to draft him in the 1st round except for moron Rex and Tannenbaum. If Coples isn't a bust then I'd like to know what your definition of bust is when it comes to first round draft picks.

Coples is a passrusher. GFY. Yeah, a passrusher who is asked to drop back and play coverage. Lol, keep living in an imaginary world where if a guy doesn't break the sack record every year, he sucks. I'm done with you, bro. Ignored. Good. Go ignore anyone who calls you out on your bullshit. Fucking cry baby. You pulled the same shit at JI all the time which is why I never bothered even replying to you. And BTW, you quoted me so shut the fuck up then if you don't like what I have to say about it, decide to tell me why I'm an idiot (which you did a terrible job of comparing interior lineman to pass rushers which is what Coples is as an OLB and down lineman... another point which you keep conveniently ignoring), and then tell me you're going to ignore me? Back on topic with McCrybaby ignoring me, Coples with his hand in the ground (AKA a passrusher) is mediocre at best. 6.5 sacks is his best season as an OLB, which is a rush linebacker, and 5.5 sacks as an every down lineman. And if the justification is that he wasn't rushing the passer all the time and was played out of position then here's your retort: He sucks as a line backer and he's UDFA level as a defensive lineman rushing the passer. Let his contract play out and let him go play backup somewhere else.

I'll tell you right now, if you think because I hung out in the hampur for the past 5 years that it means I don't know shit about football then you're dumber than I thought. Arguing over bullshit that I can't control got real old, especially on JI. I can talk football at a very high level with the best of them buddy so don't try and bully me like you did with other posters at JI because that shit isn't gonna fly and especially not over here.

Just for some perspective, if Coples' 5th year is picked up he will be paid approx 7.5 million dollars, that puts him right at the 15th highest paid DE in the league. Sorry, but Coples hasn't shown anything that warrants that kind of money. Again, it would be more prudent to see what he actually does in a 4-3 before you go committing decent money to him.

Coples played his best ball in college as a 4-3 DT so he's more of an interior lineman too. He's at his best when he plays with his hand in the dirt. In his first year where he got to play at DE he showed promise. Then he got moved to the outside and asked to drop weight. He may never be a probowl player, but he is far from a bust. There are a lot of teams he would start for and he will have a long career. I bet you think Bryan Thomas is a bust too. He got a lot of flack, because of Ed Reed but he was a useful player. In my opinion that's a solid pick. Busts are players like Stephen Hill and Gholston.

And for that kind of money he better be doubling his sack total because that's what you expect out of your pass rushing DE. Something that Coples has never shown that he's capable of.
What's even more frustrating is that he cut all that weight to be faster and he still routinely got juked by QBs and couldn't run them down. For a freak athlete like he is supposed to be I'd say that's pretty pathetic. I will say that he showed a lot better burst off the line this year. But he also has the innate Gholston ability to get glued onto a blocker. No thanks.
Let him play out his contract and let that be that. Someone even mentioned franchise tagging him. That's absolutely insane because now you're talking about the average salary of the Top 10 players in the league at his position. I wouldn't sign him to a 4 year deal at that one year rate.

Especially when they're asked to play out of position most of their career.

Coples was over-drafted by 1-2 rounds, but he's still a solid NFL player. When he's on, the guy is unstoppable and has game-changing talent. For whatever reason, he can't sustain the dominance on a consistent basis, but he's still better long-term than other options at the position.

But I can agree he's not on Stephen Hill or Gholston level either. Knowing what you know about him what round would you draft him in? I'll be honest, I wouldn't draft him it all. If I was to put a grade on it then I'd say a 5th. I can also agree that his first year showed some promise but he also showed a lot of the negatives that scouts pegged him for too. Even in his first year as a DLineman he showed really bad instincts in diagnosing run plays. He never set the edge either which is unforgivable. The guy has been criticized by Rex every year for his laziness in one way or another. It shows up on the field too. He's finally gotten better with the run but he's the very definition of JAG. You know what you have in him. If the new regime doesn't have the ability to draft a guy with equal production at worst then I'd say we're in for another over haul in 3 years because that's pretty bad. Get someone in here that doesn't need motivational coaching in order to plea with him to work harder.

Either put him on the line as a DT or cut ties. He's an ok player, but nothing special, at least from what I've seen. He's replaceable and big money shouldn't be wasted on him and his half ass effort he puts out there.

And you need those - can't be all superstars and scrubs. I agree with your other post about seeing what he can do in a 4-3 first as well...thought he showed the most potential in his rookie year when he was on the line and at that time it wasn't a pure 4-3.

That pick needs to be good. He's not good. He's replaceable. Obviously your definition of bust is a lot softer than mine because a guy that barely can contribute on a team being picked before half the league got a chance to draft a single player is what I would call a bust. He's not Gholston level bust, but he's a bust none the less.

I see about 30 names that are better or even with him. Saying you'd take him in the 5th round is ridiculous. I get that he can be lazy and runs hot and cold. The fact is he's still a very useful player.
