This guy woulda been 46-47 when these murders happened. That seems kinda late to be getting started. It wouldn't surprise me to find out he's got lots more on his resume. Like those murders in Atlantic city. They were dumped by the water too.

Im no LEO but my guess is discarded DNA was the last piece of the puzzle. Hate to post a CNN article but they break it down pretty well. The idiot basically caught himself. If he is the guy that puts him in his mid-to-late 40s when these murders took place. Pretty mature age to start serial killing. I wouldnt doubt he had many more under his belt prior.
