you guys are funny. a month ago, people were bitching and moaning that the 2 wins late in the season had effectively taken us out of drafting Mariota. 2 weeks ago everyone was declaring him the Next Big Thing after Oregon pounded FSU. now it's "don't wanna judge him off one game, but I hope we don't take him because he's a bust." Not really. Some of the zombies could be described aptly above, but others like myself have always questioned him. There's more than enough cause for concern I'm sure you've already answered this, but how do you feel about Winston?

It's no secret that winston can physically play and has demonstrated pocket mechanics to play with the best. The off field stuff coupled with his tendecy to go Cutler on his team for quarters at a time make him to big of risk for a team like us that's just endured Sanchez and 2 years of Geno.

It sucks watching these kids' futures unfold for the worse right before your very eyes. Whether its Leaf, Leinart, Young, Johnny Football, etc., and now a Mariota...these are just kids who were (or they or others believed they were) Prime 1A their whole lives, and it comes crashing down at 21, 22, 23 years old. My daughter is getting ready to go to college, and it would be awful see to her dreams smashed to smithereens in just a few more years. What the hell are you talking about? I'd still take Mariota in a heartbeat if he falls to #6. I'll pass. Build the team for a better prospect. No QB drafted this year. And please don't waste a high 2nd on Hundley. Winston will go to the Bucs.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. He seems like a dolt, but sometimes when he's on the field he destroys blitzes and looks like an NFL players. We have a good track record of developing QBs so I'm sure it'll turn out great if we draft him.

That's funny as I went to the Lakers game last week (Friday, Jan 2nd). Jeremy Lin lit it up. My point, he is still playing in the NBA, and effectively too. sure, he's a serviceable NBA player, not much more, already been salary dumped, and not even close to the hype. Not his fault he was so over-hyped and it was a fun run as Knicks fan but I was not upset when they didn't match at all. It was obvious after a teams had tape on him that his weaknesses would get exposed. Seems like such a good guy also, glad for any success he has. What a terrible post. You do realize that Lin is an elite talent, right? One of the best players at his position, no doubt. He completely destroyed the Knicks when he was on the Rockets!!!

I cant see Tampa passing him up, i would be suprised if they took Winston. It's still early so who knows how things play out but as of now I say he goes to Tampa at 1.

I don't see how we can pass on Mariota if he makes it to 6.
What I've seen: Fast, Tall, & Extremely athletic. Excellent arm. Quick release Accurate.
What I've heard: Great work ethic. Loved by his teammates. Intelligent. Durable. Coachable.
I'm no talent evaluator, but if we are looking for a franchise QB, then you have to take him.

Herbstreet, while tearing apart Mariota's performance last night on Mike and Mike this AM, offered a very interesting anecdote about Mariota. Apparently, Chip fat guy with little cock told Herbstreet that Mariota processes information and learns the fastest of any football player he had ever coached (and this was a recent statement, after fat guy with little cock had been in the NFL a couple of seasons). Herbstreet noted this while offering the positive that while Mariota doesn't have the under center footwork or super gun arm - he does read defenses, make adjustments at the line and look to his second and third options when he is in the pocket. It got me thinking because as Jet fans we've made so much light in recent years of how important the mental part of the game is. Geno and Mark were both relatively gifted physically - particularly Geno is pretty fast and can make all the throws, but the questions have always been on his decision making. fat guy with little cock is a real thought leader in the area of mental development amongst his players - collaborating with tech companies to create games that give his players mental reps and allow them to practice outside of the physical - if HE is impressed by Mariota's intelligence and adaptability, I find that compelling. The next couple of months will be fascinating for him - he is being hammered for last night, but he threw what 2 TDs, no picks, solid completion percentage for ~300 yards and his receivers dropped some crucial balls. He WAS inaccurate on a few occasions, but I have a bad feeling he is going to be a polarizing figure the next four months and will likely drop to us at 6 creating a huge question mark for the new GM. Sounds like Chad Pennington Part 2.0 to me. How fast was Chad's 40? ( nb: i loved chad, but these guys are diff players...)

And please don't waste a high 2nd on Hundley. Winston will go to the Bucs. Mariota is really the only QB that I care about drafting. Winston is up to his fucking eyeballs in red flags. From the off the field crap, to the constant mouthing off at Jimbo Fisher on the sideline, to his penchant for forcing throws, and his elongated throwing motion. I don't deny that he has talent, but the negatives outweigh the positives for me. I think he's going #1 overall anyway, so it doesn't really matter. Mariota is squeaky clean off the field, has a 6'4 220 frame with room to add weight, a good arm and can make all the NFL throws, a lightning quick release, has proven that he can hang in the pocket and keep his eyes downfield, possesses 4.4 speed and runs like a gazelle in the open, and is known as a high IQ kid who is said to be very coachable. Really the only knock on him is the offense that he comes from and the fact that his accuracy on intermediate/long throws can be a bit erratic at times. To me, he's basically a more refined version of Kaepernick. Maybe not as strong of an arm but a much better decision maker. He's also picture perfect for Chan Gailey's version of the spread. Let's not forget that Chan Gailey was basically Chip before Chip. Is Mariota some can't miss prospect along the lines of Andrew Luck? Of course not. But then again, if he was, we'd have absolutely no shot at him. He'd be a Buccaneer, period. Let's say that guys like Winston, Cooper, and Gregory are off the board...I'm not passing on a potential franchise QB with a lot of the positive traits that Mariota possesses in favor of the 2nd or 3rd ranked wideout or a passrusher like Shane Ray. If Mariota turns out to be a Top 15 QB for the next 8-10 years, then that's going to help this team out a helluva lot more in the long run than a 10-12 sack a year passrusher or an 1100 yard a year WR.

Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
If Marcus Mariota is still sitting in the green room when the Jets go on the clock, they will be hard-pressed to go in any other direction.
According to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, Chan Gailey will become the offensive coordinator in New York. That furthers a possible marriage between Mariota and the Jets. Gailey's offenses space the field particularly well and are friendly to quarterbacks. He has pulled production out of brutal NFL passers in the past.
Mariota will have a bigger adjustment to the NFL than top quarterback prospects of the last few years.
While he worked through more reads at Oregon than often credited for, Mariota is accustomed to throwing into truck-sized passing windows. His ball placement is behind schedule as a result.
Any OC who is tasked with building Mariota will have to ease him into things at first, focusing on the tools he already possesses as a thrower.
New York would be a fitting landing spot for Mariota because Gailey can craft an offense around the QB that can be successful but also keep sight of long-term development.

Good call from your previous post. You made a good point before Cimini stole it in that Gailey could work with him. Probably has better tools than Geno and bringing in a veteran that hopefully doesn't get injured would be a step in the right direction.
