IMO it's the coaches responsibility to adapt to the personel and find a way to make it work.
It's a lot easier to find a LB, then it is to let one of the premiere defensive lineman walk. Switch to a 4-3. Williams and Coples at DE is hella stout. With Wilk and Richardson at DT, we'll get to the QB. Trust me.

Would only trade him if it gets us a QB in return somehow. Whether trading for a young veteran or using him as a piece of a trade to move up in the draft to take the top guy next year. AND also if Williams shows huge potential his first season. unless the jets see something good out of genot/fitzpatrick/petty, this makes good sense. imo it doesn't have to be an actual qb but it should be a high enough draft to to either make moving up with the jet pick easily done or pick a top prospect outright. it seems like there has been quite a bit of qb movement going this season with bradford going to philly, mariota being anointed in tenn, kapernick possibly being on the trading block, foles going to the rams, etc. i don't think it makes much sense to have a ton of money wrapped up in any position if the team can't field enough key players to win. i mean wilk will be wasted if the team does poorly.

Mo Money, Mo Problems Part 2? Keep Mo, Force Williams to learn Harrison's spot, Don't resign Harrison next season. OR Trade Mo + Petty for a great QB. or Mo + Decker for an elite WR (Julio Jones & a mid round pick.) i can see the qb but not the wr. not that an elite wr wouldn't be nice but unless they're the second coming of larry fitzgerald or jerry rice it's probably not worth while.

Find a way to keep Mo, albeit not at any cost. If Mo is prepared to be sensible about his contract demands then sign him to a reasonable deal. Use the franchise tag if the Jets need to do so in order to buy more time to get the deal done.
I think Maccagnan has been clever enough to structure the deals of Revis and Cro so that they can come off the books in a year or two without much adverse hit on the cap, which gives him enough flexibility to build a long-term deal with Mo that looks after him and the Jets at the same time.
I'm slightly biased, but Mo is my favourite current Jet and I don't want to see him walk, even though I know that I'm just barracking for laundry (in the words of Jerry Seinfeld).

Why would you be ecstatic for getting a #1 for a proven DLineman entering his prime? We can keep all of them with our QB set too make peanuts for the next three years at the absolute minimum. If a guy lived in a shithole apartment but had two Ferraris in the garage he might be open to selling one car and buying a nice house. That's kinda the position the Jets are in. You can only drive one car at a time, you can only start 2 DEs at a time. We are simply loaded on the DLine...it's a great problem to have. But the Jets could certainly use a QB, maybe a stud OLB, maybe an elite RB in the next 1-2 years. Rather than playing a 3-4 DE in a position where he's not a perfect fit (ex. 3-4 NT or 4-3 DT) just to get him on the field, rather than keeping 1 of 3 guys with potential Pro Bowl talent on the sideline, I'd prefer to unlock that value and use it to significantly upgrade another position. I hear what you're saying Jetstream but we need to remember that things happen during the season that make having depth on the line crucial. I also believe locking up Mo would allow us to keep the vibe in the locker-room upbeat and positive. Then after this season you allow "Snacks" to walk (while garnering a 4th round comp pick) Cromartie gets cut as Milliner/McDougle/Walls etc. step up their game, Coples, Richardson, Leo and Mo set the rotation for 2016 with Coples leaving after 2016 for another 4th round comp. Richardson gets his extension and in 2017 you have Mo, Sheldon and Leo up front.
I think the Jets can allow this group of Leo, Mo and Sheldon to be the center pieces of a dominant line for years to come. Coples and Harrison (who I really like) are the one's to leave over the next 3 years while allowing us the chance to pick up extra picks without breaking up the "core" guys. Wilkerson gets extended before the season starts.... Bowles goes into his rookie season with a full defensive arsenal and the hope that his "D" can allow the Offense to do just enough to get to 10-11 wins.

Best case scenario..... Coples has a MONSTER camp while Mo is sitting out camp!! If it appears that Coples can give you equal to what Mo gives you then I would have no problem getting something back for Mo and saving the Cap space. That lets "Q" play 2015 and 2016 under rookie deal before reaching FA in 2017 when a lot of the big deals (Revis, Brick, Mangold) are coming off the board. If only Coples can step up big time in replacing Mo then the Jets have a LOT of flexibility concerning Mo.
Coples certainly has better physical attributes than MO.... I just don't know if he has the same "Heart".

I'm not sure why so many are so quick to want to trade away Wilkerson. When you really look at this situation the guy that is going to be the hardest to sign will be Richardson IMO. He seems to have a little more "diva" in him than Wilkerson does. I could see Richardson being far more of a distraction than Wilk ever has. I don't think the drafting of Williams makes it easier to get rid of Wilkerson but, if you develop him the right way over the next two seasons it could make the Richardson negotiations much easier. Let's say you trade Wilk, then Williams doesn't develop as fast you would like, you now have zero leverage when it comes to negotiating time with Richardson. There is plenty of money for Wilkerson and the Jets still have a lot of cap flexibility in the coming years to get a deal done.

Love the idea. Give us a couple of years to know what we have in Williams and to see how well these three guys work together.

Exactly, for as good of a prospect as Williams is, he is still an unknown in the NFL. Besides I don't think it some sort of lock that you even get a first round pick in return for Wilkerson.

The thing with Wilkerson is that he supposedly already declined a contract on par with Robert Quinn's.
Quinn's contract averages $14 million a year with $41 million in guarantees.
I love Wilk, but to pay substantially more than that for a guy who averages around 7-8 sacks a year...I just don't know.

He's under contract for 2015. He can be franchise tagged for 2016. The Jets have the Cap room to extend him. They also have an apparent surplus of 3-4 DE's who are all talented. Probably 3 of the Top 10 players on the team will be DE's. How would you approach this? I love Mo but I think we should look to "unlock his value" somehow in 2016. I'd be open to trading him IF the following things happen: 1. Leonard Williams proves in 2015 that he's the type of player we expect and he can step right in to replace Mo. 2. Todd Bowles defensive implementation in 2015 ends up leaving one of our best players (Mo, Richardson, Williams) on the bench often 3. There's a strong market pre-draft in 2016 that might allow us to leverage Wilkerson for something like an early 1st Round pick, or give the Jets the ability to package him with their 1st rounder and move up for a coveted player like a QB. What would you do with Wilkerson? If he refuses to honor his already signed contract I'd be happy to have him sit out the year as a malcontent. Then I'd trade him to a team that will put up with holdouts from signed players. The guy makes 7 million this year. I do not feel he needs to apply for food stamps. The guy is silly though. He only had 5.5 sacks last year with our bad secondary. This year if he plays he should get many more sacks and pressures due to our muchly improved secondary and possibly an outside pass rush. Then he could demand JJ WATT type money.

Quinn is a multiple double digit sack guy, Mo had double digit sacks once. Its not that I don't like Mo, I really do like him but to me he is worth more like 12-13 a year at 38 guaranteed which is more than fair. It is also probably in the best interest that the Jets trade him because Sheldon is a better player and they got to find out a way to pay him. If I were the GM I would let him stew he will come back during training camp and play the year. Regardless of how good he is I would try to make a trade before he officially becomes a free agent, getting a 1st rounder and a significant player in return. Also if the Big Kat pans out then there would be added motivation to move on. The Jets have a "good problem" here.

This is probably right in line with what Wilkerson can expect to get.
