Rich Cimini @richcimini · 4m 4 minutes ago Barring an injury, Smith "probably" will be Wk 1 starter, per Gailey, who basically said there's no way Geno can lose job in camp. #nyj How does "probably" will be Wk 1 starter = no way Geno can lose the job in camp? Cimini is such a tool. Does seem odd, but I'll admit that when I first read it I took it to mean barring something unforeseen (ex. injury).

Schelereth is such a dummy....asking if there are "higher ups" demanding that Geno start because they drafted him in the 2nd round. Well dickhead everyone who was associated with drafting Geno is gone!

I do not have a problem with this and neither should you...look at the QBs on our roster...Fitz is still rehabbing from injury, who else are we gonna throw out there LOL It's his 3rd year, learning a new system and needs the reps. A QB comp right now,(and again, Fitz is rehabbing from injury) wouldn't do anyone any good. The quicker you unshackle Geno and get him prepared to start, the quicker you can move on from him if he doesn't take a step up... Nothing new was said today.... I hear you but I think "Geno goes into camp as the starter, we'll see, opening day a long way off, etc, etc" would sound better.

This team will never take the next step with Geno Smith at QB. And we were going to take the next step with a mediocre, 11 year vet like Fitz? At least Geno still has some upside and will be surrounded by the most talented supporting cast that he's had since coming into the league. If he doesn't show considerable improvement, then move on next season and have Petty battle it out with a vet for the starting job.

Geno should get the first shot. He is the returning starter, he played well the last 4 games, plus Fitz is still rehabbing. Petty isn't ready yet and Simms, obviously, is the victim of a bizarre NFL conspiracy...
Geno deserves his shot in the new O with the improved supporting cast. Time to step up, young man.

He didn't say anything new that hasn't been already stated. So don't take this shit show too seriously. If Geno shits the bed he's gonna get yanked for the steady veteran who already knows the system. My word, people! Use your powers of reason. Exactly Geno SHOULD be the starter to open the season. But I guarantee he'll be on a short leash. They won't hesitate to pull his ass and sit him on the bench if he puts up a couple of clunkers at the beginning of the season. Why the fuck anyone would actually WANT Fitzpatrick to start over him is beyond me. At least Geno still has a shitload of physical talent and is now surrounded by an actual NFL offense. Fitz just is what he is. A mediocre, veteran backup.

Just heard the audio of what Gailey said. Not sure what he may have said before or after cut I just heard, but he said "Geno is the starter right now" and "That's the way we expected it". Nothing about starting the season unless they didn't play that portion

Who cares. I trust the staff and Gailey to know what is likely to work best here. It sure isn't Petty or Simms - and Fitz is off a broken leg.
95% of these 'camp battles' are stupid Kabuki for coaches who want to a) appease the media and b) cover their ass. Go ahead - get Geno some work - he finally has a decent offense and lets see if he can step up in year 3. No more excuses.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York Jets’ quarterback competition appears over before it even got started. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said Wednesday that Geno Smith is the team’s starter “right now,” and the Jets expect it to be that way heading into the season opener in September. “You see an awful lot of talent there. He can be pretty good if he can get it all together,” Gailey said. Coach Todd Bowles has said throughout the offseason that Smith would head into training camp taking the first-team snaps over veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is recovering from a broken leg. When asked whether Smith would be the starting quarterback when the Jets open against Cleveland, Gailey said: “Don’t make me say ‘yes,’ but probably.”
Gailey said it “wasn’t a thought” to hold a competition in camp because of the talent they’ve seen on film from Smith, who has mostly struggled in his first two seasons.

Media is just mad because they thought they were getting something to write about it and it's being taken from them.
As said above Fitz already knows Gailey and the system and has made a career coming off the bench. Why not give Geno the full reps in camp so that the coaches can evaluate and assess him. With the roster on offense all geno has to do is show he can be consistent and it's his, no one can deny he has talent he just needs to be a metric fuck ton more consistent.
If he doesn't show it then you pull him and let Fitzpatrick do what he's always done and come off the bench and be average.
Nothing is being lost here imo.

Why is this coming as a surprise? It's his 3rd year, he should take the next step now if he's ever going to. Geno is the starter. If he fails mid season. Veteran replaces him. Does so-so. Jets out of playoffs. Petty sees last couple games. We move on from Geno for good next season. What if it takes more than 2 years for a QB from a spread offense to learn the NFL game? Funny every Jet fan, every so called expert said it will take a few years for Mariota and Petty to go from the spread to a NFL offense but expected Geno to not need those same two + years to develop. Geno shouldn't get the same time frame?
