No young QB will ever succeed with Rex Ryan as the head coach. He is a QB killer. He had one QB long enough to see what he is and he sucks still. He was given the top D, a top OL, the top running game and sucked. Really sucked. But thats on Rex. The other QB is a work in progress. I'll say it again. Mariota coming from the same type of offense is universally thought of as a development player who will need a couple of seasons to learn the pro game. And he is looked as a franchise QB in the making. Geno Smith isnt given that same window by I need results now, impatient Jets fans. this is definitely true and it actually makes me more willing to give geno this season to see if he can put it together. The nice thing is we have petty gaining a year behind him so it doesn't feel like we would waste a year per say. That's why like what this regime did in the draft and fa

Teams have always masked their new signal callers with running games and simple playbooks. It's only been since the post-Vick era that these athletic freaks - who hide their immaturity with their legs - that we've been cultured to expect immediate results. Brees is fine example of someone who was thrown to the wolves right away, and didn't develop until his 3rd year. I don't know if people are using a racial bias here, but Geno is far more Brees than he is Vick. Anyone who expected Geno to look like Luck in is first 20 NFL games doesn't understand football.

I just don't get why 99.99% of fans tell us that Petty will need 2+ seasons to develop because he played in a spread from the shotgun but want Geno tossed because he hasn't looked like Luck in his 1.5 seasons of playing QB in the NFL while also coming from a spread O out of the shotgun.

I'd say it's a result of a few factors... 1 part NY-infused impatience further exacerbated by the fall of Mark Sanchez , 1 part media fueled, and 1 part lack of organization-based support (particularly the previous regime) But I'd like some of those Geno-haters to answer the following:Did Geno come from a pro-style offense before being asked to play in one? (yes/no) Was Geno allowed to sit for 1-2 years to develop his game, or be groomed appropriately? (yes/no) Did Geno have a strong supporting cast of playmakers, and a competent veteran QB be tutored by? (yes/no) Did the coaching staff and coordinators have a history of developing QBs? (yes/no) ...So what exactly did people think was going to happen? Anyone here really surprised that a kid from a 1-read spread at West Virginia struggled in first 2 years? Working with MM & a cast of JAGs on the field?

I'd say the only thing that rubbed me the wrong way with geno was his being late to a pregame meeting. People use it as proof that Rex wasn't running a tight ship, but I was equally annoyed at geno's lack of accountability. I think as a player he can still develop if he is committed to working at it. We shall see with a new regime in place

Agree, I also think the Sanchez bust has helped fuel people who 1. think the same is happening here and don't want to invest more time, even if needed to finding out if Geno as QB will have the same result 2. are Sanchez fans who still haven't gotten over the team tossing their man crush away for Geno and 3 need another nail to put in Rex coffin, if Geno busts they can add him to the list of players that failed under his watch.

That has everything to do with Rex shackling our offense into a 1960's style offense.

Especially after 6 years and on a team built to play offense.

And if you think he looked last year like he looked in 2012 then you obviously didn't watch any Eagles games last year.

He played weak teams and still managed a 1-1 td to int ratio. He ended the Eagles playoff push turning the ball over on a drive. He looked exactly the same and yes I watched him last year
