Day 5Day 5 of the countdown. Only once have the Jets ever picked at #5 in the NFL Draft. And with the 5th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the NY Jets selected Mark Sanchez, QB, USC. The Titans did pick twice in the AFL Draft, selecting G Tom Brown from Minnesota in 1961 and QB Sandy Stephens, also from Minnesota in 1962. Neither man ever played in the NFL. Sanchez still in the league?

Day 4Busy day, day 4. The Jets have had the 4th pick in the draft 6 times in their history. More good than bad on this day, although it does include one colossal bust that we traded up for. But first, a few of the good picks. With the 4th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the NY Jets selected D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia.

And with the 4th overall pick in 1977, the Jets selected OT Marvin Powell, USC

4 appears to be a good slot for offensive lineman. In 1978, the Jets selected Chris Ward, OT, Ohio State, also at #4 overall.

In 1993, with the 4th pick, Jets selected Marvin Jones, LB, FSU

And, of course, in 2003 the Jets traded up in the draft and selected Dewayne Robertson, DT, Kentucky with the 4th pick. 4 solid picks out of 5 -- overall not a bad day, day 4. The Jets also had the 4th pick in the AFL draft in 1965, selecting Indiana FB Tom Nowatzke. Nowatzke was also drafted by the Lions in the NFL draft and chose to play for them. He had an 8 year NFL career with Detroit and Baltimore.

Day 3NFL season finally kicks off tonight -- and only 3 days until the Jets open up in Buffalo. Day 3 is a day for Running Backs -- and a couple of pretty good ones were taken at 3 in the draft. With the 3rd pick in the 1964 AFL Draft, the NY Jets selected Matt Snell, RB, Ohio State

17 years later, the Jets would pick 3rd in the draft again. And with the 3rd pick in the 1981 NFL Draft, the NY Jets selected Freeman McNeil, RB, UCLA.

Day 2One of the ugliest days on the countdown. Day 2. 2nd overall pick in the draft. It means you really suck, but you didn't quite suck enough for the #1. We have had the #2 pick twice. 2 picks, 2 misses at #2. With the 2nd pick in the 1980 NFL Draft, the NY Jets selected Johnny Lam Jones, WR, Texas. 5 season. 138 receptions. It was a different game back then, but 138 receptions is about 1 season for Antonio Brown or Julio Jones today. Marvin Harrison caught 143 in 2002. Jones had 138 in 5 seasons. And we traded up with the 49ers to pick him. Bust.

And, 10 years later, the Jets earned the 2nd pick with a 4-12 record. No need to trade up this year. Actually, the Jets caught a bit of a break in the draft that year when the Cowboys, owners of a 1-15 recoord, had given up their first round pick to select Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft, so the Jets picked at #2 instead of #3. And, with the 2nd overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft, the NY Jets selected Blair Thomas, RB, Penn State. Thomas is the last RB that the Jets have selected in the first round. 27 years ago. In his 4 seasons as a Jet, Thomas rushed for 2,009 yards. 7 men have rushed for over 2,000 yards in a single season. It took Blair 4. As for the Cowboys, who gave up #1 overall, they did okay. They used a first round pick they acquired from Minnesota to move up to 17 and select Emmitt Smith, who only outrushed Blair Thomas by about 16,000 yards in his NFL career. Smith scored 164 TDs in his NFL career. Thomas had 7. Day 2 sucks.
