The Jets are slated to interview a seventh candidate for their open general manager's post on Thursday, but now comes word that one of the seven is coming in for a second interview.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan will be brought in for a second interview for the position vacated when John Idzik was fired Dec. 29. That interview will take place Friday, a person with knowledge of the talks told NJ Advance Media. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because he or she was not authorized to talk publicly on the matter.
Maccagnan has his first interview with the Jets on Monday. He has ties to Charley Casserly, the consultant assisting owner Woody Johnson in the head coach and GM search along with Ron Wolf, that go way back.
When Casserly was the general manager in Washington in 1994, he hired Maccagnan as a scout. And in 2000, as the Texans were preparing to get their start as an an expansion franchise two years later, Casserly, as their GM, brought Maccagnan in as a pro scout before quickly promoting him to coordinator of college scouting.
Maccagnan became the Texans' assistant director of college scouting in June 2010 before being elevated to his current post 13 months later.
Maccagnan got his start in scouting and personnel in the Canadian Football League and the defunct World League of American Football in the early 1990s. He was the director of player personnel for the London Monarchs of the World League when ex-Bills head coach Doug Marrone, one of the Jets' head coaching candidates, played for the Monarchs. Maccagnan also has ties to another Jets coaching candidate, Gary Kubiak, who was the Texans' head coach from 2006-13. Kubiak, the offensive coordinator for the Ravens, has said he will not interview until after the Ravens' season ends.
Casserly told a Tampa, Fla., radio station on Wednesday he wasn't necessarily wedded to the idea of hiring a GM before selecting a head coach. So we shall see.
