If only he'd declared after his freshman year. I keep hearing how phenomenal he was his freshman year. Meh. He was ok. For an 18 year old freshman his play was encouraging. But he wasn't phenomenal. I saw him live in his very first game at MetLife against my Orangemen. I was underwhelmed given the hype by a bunch of PSU we are friends with. _

I saw him live in his very first game at MetLife against my Orangemen. I was underwhelmed given the hype by a bunch of PSU we are friends with. _ I thought it was extremely impressive the way that he was able to step in right away as an 18 year old kid and essentially run an NFL offense. So many of these kids in college these days never even take a snap from under center or are asked to look any further than their 2nd read. Hack was essentially the opposite. Then O'Brien left for Houston, Allen Robinson headed to the pros, and Penn State let Hack's OL and skill positions go to utter dogshit. Not to mention the spread system that Franklin brought with him. If there was a book on how to completely mishandle a prized young QB prospect, then Penn State surely would've written it with Hackenberg. Another thing I'll always give the guy credit for is that he could've easily reneged on his commitment to PSU when all of the Sandusky crap was going on. He was the #1 recruit in the country and could've transferred anywhere he wanted, but he stuck it out. Doesn't have anything to do with his abilities as a QB, but that's a very admirable character trait that I respect the hell out of. I also think the Jets have handled him very well so far. He's the kind of kid where a redshirt season should be mandatory. A year to regain some confidence, digest the playbook and work on his footwork and mechanics a bit. The odds are probably at least 60% that he isn't the teams longterm solution at QB, but I definitely want to see him get a chance next season barring Petty playing lights out over these last few games. Even then I would want to have an open competition between Petty and Hack going into next season.

Let's see what we have with Petty, and let's see where Hack is in the spring and how he progresses into training camp. Let the two of them battle it out for the job. Both have size, big arms, and are GREAT KIDS with plus character.

His freshman year was "promising" but didn't move the earth beneath anyone's feet.

I don't know if there's even 5 draftable QBs this year. 1- L. Falk 2- M. Trubisky 3- D. Kizer 4- D. Watson 5- J. Allen Lol Hackenberg got drafted last year. In the SECOND round no less. _ Hackenberg would be the #1 QB this draft

I dont understand this line of thinking. He put 2 years on tape as one of the worst starers in FBS. Just because he's 6 4 and coachable doesn't mean he can play QB. Look at Penn State since he left... I personally would have preferred it if the Jets waited to see if Hackenberg was still available in Round 3, but he is not the reason PSU was terrible and has now had success. He was playing behind an O line with guys who had never played O line before. There were many times that teams rushed only 3 lineman and had multiple free rushers. It is impossible to put into words just how bad the O line was. No way you can't give him a pass for that season. They were that bad. He may, or may not, become a starting QB, or even a competent back-up, but the Jets were not the only team that graded him in the top 5 of available QBs. He was ranked as a third round or better pick by many teams, and just about every team ranked him higher than Dak Prescott. No reason why Hackenburg, like Prescott, can't over-perform his draft ranking. Patriots were targeting Hack in round 2. How Jet like to let him pass up & he end up succeeding Tom Brady for the next 15+ years after Brady retire.

As luck would have it, the Patriots drafted the only other QB I was high on from the later rounds. I was high on Cook from Michigan State, but I thought he would go much higher .

I'm not saying he was bad, he just wasn't phenominal like some folks sugest with revisionist history. Some who never saw him play and just read other people's opinions on him. _

NO one knew who he was targeting. He might have been creating a smokescreen in the hopes WE took him. There was no was Belli was taking such a stiff, inaccurate QB, certainly not in the second round. _

I like him and I happen to think he will be what I have been waiting for . I thought it was going to be chad Pennington, but he couldn't stay healthy . Right now, I would like to fix the OL and add another RB . My pick for the RB is Wayne Gallman .

And knowing what we know of his scumbag persona, it's more likely than not that if anything he was just sending up a smokescreen. _

I thought he was going to become the best QB in franchise history, surpassing my all time favorite Namath. I saw SBs and sugar plums and rainbows leading to pots of gold. Fuck. _
