i just read that fitz is willing to sign a one year contract for 12 million guaranteed. what i don't get is how this is so much different from the 3 year contract the jets offered. i see where he might want a shorter term since he might light it up again this season. but this is fitz we're talking about and it's not likely that he will do much better than this this past season. yeah the jets got better on offense but he still has issues throwing an accurate deep ball. i guess we shoud give him credit for feeling he's better than a 12 million contract and wants a bigger one next season.

According to what appears to be a majority of writers, Jets are not likely to agree to a 1 year $12MM deal:
Rich Cimini 1h Rich Cimini @richcimini The Jets will not sign Ryan Fitzpatrick for one year, $12 million. That is all. Carry on. #nyj
Albert Breer @albertbreer 6h6 hours ago Albert Breer Retweeted NY Daily News Sports For a variety of reasons, I'd be shocked if Jets do a 1-year, $12 million deal with Fitz. Isn't happening.
Kimberley A. Martin @kmart_LI 7h7 hours ago Kimberley A. Martin Retweeted Rich Cimini Exactly.Kimberley A. Martin added, Rich Cimini @richcimini The Jets will not sign Ryan Fitzpatrick for one year, $12 million. That is all. Carry on. #nyj
Jason_OTC @jason_OTC 40m40 minutes ago Flanders, NJ Id be surprised if the Jets were willing to pay Fitzpatrick $12M for just 1 year. Point of that guarantee is to have him for 2 years
Joe Caporoso @turnonthejets 8h8 hours ago If I were #Jets I'd offer 1 year, 8M dollar deal and dare Sexton to find another team who beats that offer. Name me a team who does...
Dom Cosentino on NJ.com: They were willing to offer $12 million in the first year of a three-year deal as a way of front-loading the contract so as to have favorable terms afterward. But they're bidding against themselves as far as Fitzpatrick's price point, and have been for months. Why just give him $12 million for one year if they don't have to?

You obviously answered your own question. The second and third year pay Fitz 6 million a year and he knows that if he has another career type year, he can make that $12M and possibly more in just 1 year. It's obvious that the Jets think he will only be their starter in 2016 and a backup to one of their young QBs in 2017. He was only offered as much as he was in years 2 & 3 in case the young QBs falter. If he only signs a one year deal and he has a good year, the Jets will be in a somewhat similar situation next off-season with inexperienced QBs and Fitz may be able to command much more. Not a bad calculated gamble for him. That's why, even though I am not a fan of Fitz, I think it was well played by Mac.

I see this as just another part of the negotiation process. Jets made their offer public, now Fitz/Sexton making their counter public. Would be nice if both sides stopped the public posturing, got in a room together and hammered out a deal that is fair for Fitz and the Jets. If they can't reach a deal, so be it.

You don't offer 12 mil to a journeyman QB who never has or will make the playoffs when your only competition is yourself.
You start Geno Smith for buttons and tie up your best asset in Wilkerson. If Mac does this he can follow Fitz out the door next year for all I care.

Spreading it out over three years was the only way the Jets could make the cap hit work. He's "willing to accept " an offer that was never made. Let him take somebody else's lowball offer and be done with this jerk already

No need to putz around with Fitz for another year.

gotta disagree with you fellas on this.... Fitz is the best option for more wins, which is the final goal for this year. Kick his ass out if no playoffs, and go with the young QBS in 2017
